Mike Sonko has begun to crack the whip after owners of buildings withing Nairobi Central Business District failed to heed to building re-paint directive. some of the buildings targeted include Ambassador House (Moi Avenue), Loise House (Latema Road) and Jiame House (Haile Selassie), Citien TV reported. Others are Karachi House (River Road), Leon House (Tom Mboya Street), Commercial House among others. “We believe that they all read our notice which we published in the local dailies and that is why we are going for them,” acting County Secretary Leboo Morintat said.
Those being targeted for arrest are the owners of buildings, caretakers and the users of the buildings,” Morintat added. He further warned that the county will shut down premises that have not been repainted. The law requires that buildings in the Nairobi city centre be repainted after every two years. Nairobi City Council had also given blanket approval to the property owners to improve plot frontages that is the area between the plot boundary and the road kerb.
The owners had been given until end of July 2019, to repaint their buildings but the deadline of the order lapsed before they did so. UGC In the notice issued earlier in July 2019, Morintat said it was anchored by the law including county by-laws and the Public Health Cap 242. The move to clean, repaint or redecorate was aimed at improving the aesthetic and beauty of the capital city. This was to enhance the appeal of the city which has been globally recognized among the most dynamic cities and is also a strategic economic and commercial hub of East and Central Africa In 2017, Nairobi was ranked position ten among the top 20 African cities in terms of economic activity, consumer size and connectivity.
